Milaaj Editorial / Research Insights

It is the 29th of the month. Your payroll spreadsheet is nearly done, the bank wants a salary file in a very specific format, and you are copying employee numbers by hand because one wrong digit means a rejected transfer.
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Many UAE businesses still run payroll in Excel and rebuild the bank file every month. This guide explains how Odoo payroll UAE setups work, how the Wage Protection System (WPS) fits in, what changed in the June 2026 salary rule, and what to prepare before your first run.
Odoo has a UAE payroll localisation that calculates salaries, end-of-service gratuity and leave, and can export a WPS file (SIF format) for your bank. You complete the WPS settings, add employee identification numbers, generate payslips, post the entries and export the payment report as a UAE WPS file. You then upload that file through your bank. Confirm which Odoo edition you need before budgeting.
The Wage Protection System (WPS) is the UAE system through which private-sector employers pay salaries via banks, exchange houses or other authorised financial institutions, so the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) can monitor payment. The UAE government states that private-sector employers must pay wages through WPS, as set out on its payment of wages page.
Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026 took effect on 1 June 2026. Reporting from advisory firms and the government page describe these main points:
The rules apply to private-sector employers registered with MOHRE. Some sectors and worker categories are excluded, and advisers' summaries do not clearly address free zones, so check how it applies to your licence.
Odoo payroll UAE works through a localisation package that adds UAE salary rules, structures and accounting entries to Odoo's payroll. Odoo's documentation names two modules: one for rules, calculations and salary structures, and one for the accounting entries that post payroll to your books. You can read the full setup in Odoo's UAE payroll documentation.
In plain terms, it works like this:
The documentation also notes that the output file contains one record per employee, variable pay records where needed and a single control record for the file.
A SIF file is the salary information file banks and exchange houses use for WPS uploads. Odoo's documentation sets out these steps:
You then open the .sif file to check it, or convert it for review, and send it through your bank.
Odoo's documentation does not use the term "MOL ID". The closest field is the employer unique ID, so confirm the exact field name in your version.
Odoo's documentation page for UAE payroll does not state whether payroll requires Enterprise, and its pricing page did not settle the question either. Confirm it with Odoo or your implementation partner before budgeting. Our guide to Odoo Community vs Enterprise in the UAE explains how the editions differ.
Odoo's UAE payroll localisation covers the items that UAE employers handle every month. The table below follows Odoo's own documentation, so check the current version of the page for the latest rules.
Item | What Odoo's documentation says |
|---|---|
End-of-service benefit | None under one year; 21 days' salary per year under five years; 30 days per year after five |
Annual leave | Provision based on leave days, with a remaining-balance rule to pay or recover the difference |
Sick leave | Tiered: 15 days fully paid, 30 at half pay, 45 unpaid |
Unpaid leave | Deducted at (days × gross salary) ÷ 30 |
Social insurance | Handled for UAE nationals, with employer and employee contributions |
Other deductions | DEWS deductions, manual deductions and out-of-contract day adjustments |
End-of-service accruals are recorded as a monthly provision. Odoo's documentation notes that this accrual does not show on the employee's payslip printout and does not affect net pay.
Rates and rules can change, so review the figures with your accountant. If you want a team to map these rules to your contracts and policies, our ERP development team in Dubai can configure and test them with you.
Odoo prepares your payroll and the WPS file, but it does not run compliance on its own. A few limits to plan around:
Payroll sits next to your other finance compliance work. If you are also setting up tax in Odoo, our walkthrough on setting up UAE corporate tax in Odoo covers that side.
Treat the first run as a test, not a live payment. A short checklist:
Run payroll in parallel for one month if you can. It is the cheapest insurance you will buy.
Start by counting your employees and listing the allowances you pay. Those two answers shape your setup more than any feature list.
If you would like help configuring payroll, testing your first WPS file and moving off spreadsheets, our Odoo implementation team in Dubai can plan it step by step.
Yes. Odoo's UAE payroll localisation includes a WPS export format that produces a .sif file. You set up the WPS settings, add employee identification numbers, generate payslips and export the payment report.
A SIF file is the salary information file used for WPS uploads. In Odoo, complete the WPS settings, generate and post payslips, then create the payment report with the UAE WPS export format. Check the file before uploading it through your bank.
Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026 took effect on 1 June 2026. Salaries are due by the first day of each month for the previous month, employers must pay at least 85% on time, and penalties escalate from day 2 to day 21 after the due date.
Yes. Odoo's documentation describes end-of-service rules: nothing under one year, 21 days' salary per year under five years, and 30 days per year after five. Review the settings with your accountant against current law.
Odoo's UAE payroll page does not state the edition, so confirm it with Odoo or your implementation partner before budgeting. Third-party add-ons also exist, but check their support and compatibility with your Odoo version.
Odoo payroll UAE setups turn a monthly scramble into a repeatable routine: clean data in, payslips out, a WPS file ready for your bank. With the June 2026 rule making deadlines and escalation steps tougher, a reliable routine matters more than it used to.
Prepare your records, run one month in parallel and confirm the edition before you buy. Do that, and the 29th of the month stops being stressful. If you would like a partner to set it up with you, that is the kind of project Milaaj Brandset takes on with UAE businesses every week.
