A new lead tells you, "I found you on ChatGPT." You open Google Analytics 4, look for the source, and find nothing that says ChatGPT. Was the lead imagining it, or is GA4 hiding the visit?
Most of the time, GA4 has the data but files it in the wrong place. This guide shows you how to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4, along with visits from Perplexity, Gemini and other AI tools, using one custom channel group and a simple report.
To track ChatGPT traffic in GA4, create a custom channel group in Admin that groups visits by AI source domains such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Place it above the Referral channel, then review it in your Traffic acquisition report. Some AI visits still appear as Direct or Unassigned, so treat the numbers as a minimum.
GA4 sorts every visit into a channel using rules about its source and medium. AI tools do not fit neatly into those rules.
Google's definitions are strict. Direct needs a source of "(direct)" with a medium of "(not set)" or "(none)". Referral needs a medium of "referral", "app" or "link". A visit that matches neither can end up as Unassigned.
That means an AI click may land in Referral, Direct or Unassigned depending on how it arrived.
It is commonly reported that mobile AI apps remove the referrer, so GA4 records those visits as Direct. It is also reported that ChatGPT has added a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to some links. Behaviour like this changes over time, so check your own data before you rely on any claim, including this one.
In your reports, AI visits usually appear as a source domain, sometimes with an unclear medium. These are the sources to look for:
AI tool | Source domain to look for |
|---|---|
ChatGPT | chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com |
Perplexity | perplexity.ai |
Gemini | gemini.google.com |
Microsoft Copilot | copilot.microsoft.com |
Claude | claude.ai |
The medium may read "referral", "(none)" or "(not set)". That is why the channel rule in Step 2 should not depend on the medium.
Before you build anything, check whether AI visits already appear in your data. Make sure GA4 is installed correctly first, and if you are unsure, our step-by-step GA4 setup guide covers it.
Then follow these steps:
If you see rows, you already have AI traffic. If you do not, move on to the channel group anyway, since it also captures future visits.
A custom channel group puts every AI source into one channel, so you can read the total at a glance.
According to Google's channel group documentation, you create one in Admin, under Data display, then Channel groups. You need the Editor role or above on the property.
Follow these steps:
chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com
Review this list every quarter, because AI tools launch and change domains often.
Google says traffic goes into the first channel whose rules it matches. If AI Search sits below Referral, referral rules catch the visit first and your AI channel stays empty.
Once the group is saved, build a simple report that answers real business questions. The easiest route is to open the Traffic acquisition report and switch the channel group to "Channels with AI."
Track these four numbers each month:
Send the same four numbers to your team each month. A consistent report is the kind of measurement setup Milaaj Brandset builds for clients, so decisions come from trends instead of one-off screenshots.
Some AI visits will never carry a source, so you need a second line of evidence.
A self-reported field is often the quickest way to confirm the pattern, and a proper lead generation setup makes sure that answer is captured and passed to your sales team.
GA4 only records visits. It cannot see when an AI answer mentions your brand and nobody clicks.
Someone might read about you in an AI answer, then search your name on Google or type your web address later. That visit shows as organic or direct, not AI.
So GA4 shows the clicks, while mention tracking needs other methods, such as running your key questions through AI tools regularly and noting whether you appear. Our guide on how to optimize your brand for AI Overviews and ChatGPT citations explains how to earn those mentions in the first place.
Numbers only help if they change what you do. Use the report in three ways:
If you want help turning the findings into rankings and citations, professional SEO services in Dubai can build the next round of pages around them.
Yes, AI search traffic is worth tracking because it shows which pages AI tools trust enough to send visitors to, even when volumes are small. Set up the channel group once, review it monthly, and treat the numbers as a minimum. It costs little and gives you early insight into a growing source.
Quick check before you start:
If you answered yes to any of these, set it up today.
Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Change the dimension to Session source / medium and search for "chatgpt". For a permanent view, create a custom channel group that includes chatgpt.com and your other AI sources.
Some apps and browsers do not pass the source of a click. GA4 then has nothing to record except "(direct)". You can reduce the gap with UTM tags on links you control and a "how did you hear about us" question on your forms.
Open Admin, go to Data display, then Channel groups, and create a new group. Add a channel with a Source condition that matches a regex of AI domains, then place it above Referral and save.
Yes. The regex only matches the domains you list, so a new tool will not appear until you add it. Review the list every three months and add any new AI domains you see in your reports.
For many sites it is still small, so check your own numbers before you decide how much effort it deserves. Tracking costs very little once the channel group exists, and it shows which of your pages AI tools are already sending people to.
You do not need a complicated setup to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4. One custom channel group, one regex and a monthly report will tell you far more than guessing from lead comments.
Start with Step 1 today and see what is already in your data. If you would like a team to check your tracking, tag your key actions and build the report with you, GA4 and GTM services in Dubai can set it all up properly.
Some of your customers may already be finding you through AI tools. Now you will be able to see it.
