Milaaj Editorial / Research Insights

Your phone rings all day. Your WhatsApp is full of enquiries. Then you open Google Analytics and it says your website produced three conversions this month.
For many UAE businesses, this is the daily reality. Customers rarely fill in a form. They tap the green WhatsApp button or the phone number in the header, and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) does not count either by default.
This guide shows you how to track both as leads using Google Tag Manager, how to mark them as key events, and how to test the setup. It also explains what a click cannot tell you, so you do not over-trust the numbers.
To track WhatsApp clicks and phone calls in GA4, create two Google Tag Manager triggers: one that fires when a link contains wa.me or api.whatsapp.com, and one for links that start with tel:. Send each to GA4 as a named event, then mark both events as key events in GA4. Test with Tag Manager Preview and GA4 DebugView before publishing.
GA4 has a feature called enhanced measurement that collects some events automatically. According to Google, these include page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads and form interactions. You can see the full list on Google's enhanced measurement page.
Phone links and WhatsApp links are not on that list. Google's page defines outbound clicks as links that lead to another website, and it does not say how tel: links or WhatsApp links are treated. A WhatsApp link points to a different domain, so it may be recorded as a generic outbound click, but you should not rely on that. Check your own data in DebugView, and set up dedicated events so you get clean, labelled results.
Before you build anything, decide what you are counting. For most service businesses there are two useful events:
Event name | What it records | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
whatsapp_click | A visitor tapped a WhatsApp link | They intended to start a chat |
phone_click | A visitor tapped a phone number | They intended to call |
Neither event proves the chat happened or the call connected. They are strong signals of intent, which is still far more useful than counting nothing.
You need three things in place:
If you are new to Tag Manager, our beginner's guide to Google Tag Manager explains tags, triggers and variables. If GA4 itself is not set up yet, start with our GA4 setup guide for business websites.
Follow these steps in Google Tag Manager. Menu names can change over time, so use them as a guide.
Here is the trigger in plain terms:
Setting | Value |
|---|---|
Trigger type | Click, links only |
Fires on | Some link clicks |
Condition | Click URL contains wa.me (add a second condition for api.whatsapp.com) |
Tag event name | whatsapp_click |
If you use several WhatsApp buttons, such as a floating icon and a header link, the same trigger covers them all. The Click Text or a parameter for the button location tells you which one performs best.
The method is almost identical. Only the trigger condition changes.
Two things to know:
Sending the events is not enough. To count them as leads in your reports, mark them as key events. Google describes a key event as an event that measures an action that is particularly important to the success of your business, and says any event you collect can become one. You can read more in Google's key events guide.
To do it:
If you also want to report on which button was clicked, create a custom dimension for the parameter you added. Your reports can then break clicks down by button or page.
Never publish and hope. Test in this order:
Common problems to look for:
Once data builds up, look at the numbers in three ways:
A click is the start of a lead, not the end. If you want help turning those enquiries into customers, our lead generation services in Dubai cover the follow-up as well as the tracking.
If you run Google Ads, link your GA4 property to your Google Ads account and use your key events to measure campaign results. That way, your campaigns are judged on WhatsApp and phone enquiries, not just form fills.
Do this carefully. Make sure the events are firing correctly before you use them to guide bids, because bad data will teach the system the wrong lessons. A PPC management team in Dubai can help you decide which events deserve to be optimised towards.
This is the most important section. A click is not a conversation, and a conversation is not a sale. GA4 cannot see whether the WhatsApp chat started, whether the call connected, or whether the person bought.
You can close part of the gap:
If you plan to handle WhatsApp at scale, the WhatsApp Business API connects chats to your systems. We cover that in our guide to the WhatsApp Business API for UAE businesses.
If your site uses a cookie banner or consent settings, visitors who decline analytics may not be recorded. That means your WhatsApp and phone counts can understate real activity. Treat the numbers as a reliable trend, not a perfect total.
Make sure your privacy notice explains what you track and why. If you are unsure what applies to your business, ask an adviser.
If you would rather not edit Tag Manager yourself, a proper setup takes a few hours and gives you data you can trust. Our GA4 and Tag Manager team in Dubai can build the triggers, tag the events, test everything and show you how to read the reports.
Not reliably. GA4's enhanced measurement collects outbound clicks, but Google's documentation does not say how WhatsApp or tel: links are handled. Set up dedicated events in Google Tag Manager, and confirm them in DebugView.
Create a Google Tag Manager trigger for links that start with tel:, send it to GA4 as an event such as phone_click, and mark the event as a key event. This counts taps on your number. To track actual calls, you need call tracking numbers.
No. A click shows intent to chat, but GA4 cannot see whether the conversation happened. Treat it as a lead signal, then confirm real enquiries through your team, a CRM or a prefilled message that tags the source.
First send the whatsapp_click event from Tag Manager and let it appear in GA4's events list. Then open the events area in Admin and turn on the key event option next to it. Menu names may change, so follow Google's current key events guide.
It depends on your analytics setup and your obligations. If you use a consent banner, visitors who decline may not be recorded, so counts can be lower than reality. Explain your tracking in your privacy notice and ask an adviser if you are unsure.
Tracking WhatsApp clicks and phone calls in GA4 is one of the quickest wins in analytics. A few triggers, two event tags and a test session turn invisible enquiries into numbers you can use.
Just remember what the numbers mean. A click is a signal, not a sale, so pair your tracking with a prefilled message, a CRM or a simple question to every new customer. Do that, and your reports finally match what you see in your inbox. If you want a partner to build the setup properly, that is the kind of problem Milaaj Brandset helps UAE businesses solve.
